The Wauwatosa Wild United co-op team will travel to Janesville on Tuesday to play a 7 p.m. regional game to open the postseason.
The Wild United is the 12th - and last - seed in Sectional No. 7. Their opponent, the Janesville co-op team of Janesville Craig/Parker, is the fifth seed.
The Wild United played a solid game in a 4-3 loss Feb. 3 to Whitefish Bay at the Pettit Center, with a third-period rally falling short, and then dropped a 5-1 decision to 17th-ranked Waunakee on Friday at Middleton.
Against Bay, they trailed 2-0 going into the final period, when Ryan Regeth scored with assists going to Stephen Dahl and Tim Schreiner. The Wild United then got on the board again when Alex Sommerfeld scored with an assist from Dahl to tie the game at 2-2.
Whitefish Bay scored on a wrap-around goal late in the third, so Wild United coach Pete Koszarek pulled goalie Matt Ranta in the hopes the extra man would help them score. But the Whitefish Bay Blue Dukes scored again on an open net to make the game, 4-2, with 18 seconds left on the clock.
Sommerfeld then got a short-handed breakaway and scored again, but it was too little, too late.
"Matt Ranta was working hard for us tonight," Koszarek said. "We didn't lose this game in the third period, we lost it in the first two periods of play."
The Wild United was outshot 56-27.
On Friday, Waunakee scored single goals in the first two periods and then put the game away with three third-period goals.
Dahl scored with an assist from Regeth for the Wild United's only goal. They were outshot 96-14.
"This was the Matt Ranta show," Koszarek said. "We worked very hard and had a few chances that we didn't capitalize on. But we played a very good game, and we played them right to the last minute.
They play their final regular-season game at Fond du Lac Springs at noon Saturday.
