The Wauwatosa East girls dropped five straight games and watched their record fall to 1-8 in Greater Metro Conference play and 3-11 overall.
The two Brookfield schools beat the Red Raiders by 46 points last week, and then Divine Savior Holy Angels beat them, 48-29, Tuesday.
The Red Raiders opened last week at home Jan. 26 by dropping a 58-32 decision to first-place Brookfield Central. After hanging with Central in the first quarter - trailing 11-7 - Tosa East quickly fell behind, being outscored 35-14 in the second and third periods, to trail 46-21 going into the final period.
No Red Raiders player got to double figures. Cara Walls and Talisha Simpson led the way with nine and seven points, respectively. However, eight Tosa East players did get on the scoreboard.
"We did play well for the first quarter and one-half," Tosa East coach Rob Hamill said, "but their pressure wore us down as the game went into the later part of the second and all of the third quarter."
The Red Raiders then traveled to Brookfield East on Friday, dropping a 51-31 decision to the Lady Spartans.
"We worked all week to correct what we thought were the major problems from Tuesday's game," Hamill said. "Leading the way in that list of issues was rebounding."
Hamill felt that the Red Raiders often played half-court defense well enough to disrupt the Lady Spartans offense and force missed shots, only to have them get second and third shot opportunities.
"We rebounded poorly, both offensively and defensively," Hamill said. "On top of that, we had our first 20-plus turnover experience of the season. We had been taking care of the ball pretty well all season until Friday's game."
The Lady Spartans quickly jumped on Tosa East with a 19-8 first quarter and a 13-3 second quarter for a 32-11 lead. The Red Raiders outscored Brookfield East, 20-19, in the second half, but it was too little, too late.
Walls scored 14 points, and Simpson added seven.
"This was a game we should have been able to be much more competitive in," Hamill said. "It was disappointing."
Hamill did praise the play of Walls and sophomore Emily Jensen.
"Cara Walls, when she is on, continues to be tough to defend and is a difference-maker for us," Hamill said. "Emily Jensen played at a faster pace on numerous occasions. Though she needs to use her body better, she is improving defensively and has a great attitude and work ethic."
Tosa East will play at home the next two times out. They host West Allis Central in Greater Metro Conference play at 7:30 p.m. Friday and then play their annual game with Wauwatosa West at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
"We can be much better than we showed this week," Hamill said. "I take the ultimate responsibility for it and am totally committed to getting us back on track."
