Boys basketball: Chargers hand Red Raiders biggest GMC loss of the year

Jan. 27, 2010 | 0 comments

Wauwatosa East suffered its worst Greater Metro Conference loss of the season Friday at Sussex Hamilton, 58-41, and its third-worst loss of the year overall.

The 17-point defeat was the largest margin of defeat in a GMC game since a 35-point loss at Marquette (71-36) on Feb. 11, 2003. The Red Raiders also suffered a 17-point loss at Marquette (60-43) on Feb. 26, 2009.

Tosa East trailed 13-7 after one quarter and 27-17 at intermission. The Chargers then ran out to an 18-11 third-quarter advantage for a 45-28 lead going into the final period.

East also struggled from the free-throw line, hitting only 9-of-18 shots, a .500 rating.

Sophomore Darrell Bowie was actually the game's high scorer with 14 points on four 2-point field goals and six free throws. Jake Larson and Dan Sayles were next with seven points each.

The Chargers had excellent balance, as nine players got on the scoreboard, led by Brett Meinecke (13), Brian Gryszkiewicz (11), Kleman Hamadi (11) and Brian Krohn (nine).

The Red Raiders will be looking for some revenge in their next two games, host Brookfield East on Friday and Marquette on Tuesday, both games at 7:30 p.m.

Tosa East lost, 27-26, to the Spartans on Dec. 11 and dropped a 42-41 to the Hilltoppers on Dec. 15.
