Girls Basketball: East loses to Hamilton

Jan. 26, 2010 | 0 comments

Wauwatosa East dropped a hard-fought 47-35 decision to visiting Sussex Hamilton on Friday, despite having an excellent night from the free-throw line.

The Tosa East Red Raiders' defense had some problems opening and closing the game, allowing 16 points in each of the first and fourth quarters.

Their defense picked up, allowing only 15 points in the second and third periods combined, but they only managed to score 10 points and couldn't take advantage of it.

Tosa East trailed 16-12 after one quarter, 23-18 at intermission and 31-22 after three quarters.

"We had some turnovers in the second half, especially in the third quarter, that hurt our chance to get ahead," Tosa East coach Rob Hamill said. "We played well enough to win on defense for most of the game. We just turned the ball over too much in the second half and ran into a dry spell offensively during the third quarter that led to this one slipping away."

They were 12 of 14 from the free-throw line, an .857 shooting percentage. Cara Walls and Emily Jensen each had four free throws.

Walls and Talisha Simpson led the way with 12 points apiece, while Jensen and Cassie Osinski (four points each) and Alexa Kramer (three) also scored, as only five Red Raiders got in the scoring column.

The Chargers' Courtney Lemon had an excellent game with 24 points coming on 12 field goals. Stephanie Kirchner added 14, eight from the free-throw line.

"As one can see from the box score, 38 of their 47 points came from their two big inside players," Hamill said. "Both are legit 6-footers with strong bodies and good skills."

Tosa East has gone 2-4 in its last six games, but the Red Raiders have dropped three in a row. They are 1-6 in the GMC and 3-9 overall.

Tosa East hosts Brookfield East on Friday and then travels to Divine Savior Holy Angels on Tuesday; both are 7:30 p.m. games.

The Brookfield East Lady Spartans won their first meeting against Tosa East, 62-34, Dec. 11. The DSHA Dashers beat Tosa East, 70-34, Dec. 15.
