Tosa grapplers fourth at Janssen invite

Jan. 26, 2010 | 0 comments

Wauwatosa hosted the Tom Janssen Tournament at Wauwatosa West on Saturday, finishing fourth in the eight-team invite.

Tosa beat Waterford (45-27) and then lost matches to Wisconsin Lutheran (40-32), Manitowoc (45-15) and Lake Geneva Badger (37-22).

"We took fourth place out of eight teams," Wauwatosa coach Kent Morin said. "It seems odd that we took fourth being 1-3 on the day.

"But the way it works is we seed the tournament. Then we wrestle the first round. Winners go into the winners' pool, and losers go into the losers' pool."

Demetrius Mensah at 125 pounds and Ryan Reagan at 140 had the best results for Tosa, finishing with winning records.

Mensah was 4-0 with one pin and one major decision, and Reagan was 3-1 with two pins and one major decision.

Brian Condon at 103, Jonathan Tripi at 112, Dylan Kissinger at 152, Ian Seybold at 171 and Kevin Kanngeiser at 285 all finished 2-2 with one pin apiece.

Cory Jay went 2-2 with a technical fall at 160, and Patrick Campbell went 2-2 at 119.

Max Nelson went 1-2 at 145; Riley O'Conor at 130 and Scott Kamholtz at 215 were each 1-3. Aaron Sobieszczyk at 189 finished 0-3.

"We opened the day with a solid win over Waterford, a team that we thought was much closer to us on paper," Morin said. "Then we let one get away against Wisconsin Lutheran. We needed to win one more match. Unfortunately, we lost each of the three close matches that decided the meet."

Morin felt his squad finished the day with a solid effort against Lake Geneva Badger, saying solid wins were turned in by Condon, Tripi, Campbell, Mensah, O'Conor and Meade.

"Overall, the quality of teams at the Janssen this year was up significantly," Morin said. "Manitowoc won it, with a very good team from Badger taking second. The competition was good and hopefully that will help us as we start preparing for the conference and regional/sectional tournaments."

New Berlin 53, Wauwatosa 16 - "Not our finest hour," was how Morin put it after Tosa lost to the New Berlin Eisenhower/West co-op Jan. 20.

"This is where our youth and inexperience showed up," Morin said. Winning their matches were Jay (10-0, major decision), Reagan (pin, 5:22) and Mensah (pin, 5:26).
