Wrestling: Tosa whips Whitnall in dual action

Jan. 20, 2010 | 0 comments

It was Parents' Night and Senior Night when Wauwatosa hooked up with Whitnall at Wauwatosa West on Jan. 13 - and everyone got their money's worth.

Tosa won a thriller, 30-27, as both coaches changed lineups at 12 of the 14 weights in an attempt to get the upper hand.

"What an exciting night," Tosa coach Kent Morin said. "We had a big crowd, and they saw an exciting match. It was a big chess match between the two coaching staffs."

Whitnall is Tosa's biggest rival in the Woodland Conference, and every time they meet it is a highly charged match.

"The guys really did a great job of wrestling smart matches," Morin said. "They stayed focused and trusted the coaching staff to put them in a matchup where they could be successful. We ended up winning eight matches, losing four and forfeiting two so we could get better matchups."

The biggest turning point of the night happened at 135 pounds, when Michael Meade upset Matt Price 9-4. Meade came out fired up, took Price down and put him right to his back for a five-point lead. He held on to win.

"He wrestled a very smart match to preserve the victory," Morin said. "Michael is only a sophomore but he wrestles beyond his years and is going to have a really good high school career."

Ian Seybold, who was wrestling his first match since returning from a bout with bronchitis, pinned his opponent at 171 for a huge victory.

"We felt like Ian was favored in the match, but for him to get us six team points at that stage of the meet was big," Morin said.

Other highlights included Scott Kamholtz winning, 1-0, at 215, with his point coming on an escape in the second period, and Kevin Kanngeiser clinching the win with his 7-2 victory at 285.

Demetrius Mensah at 130, Ryan Reagan at 145, Dylan Kissinger at 152 and Cory Jay at 160 were the other winners.

Mensah (27-2) continues to be ranked 11th in the state, and Reagan (24-6) has earned honorable mention all-state honors in the latest ranking.

The other top records on the team are Kissinger (19-6), Meade (18-9), Brian Condon (18-12), Jay (15-9) and Seybold (14-7).
