Hurricanes nip Brown Deer/USM in dual action

The Wauwatosa Hurricanes beat the co-op team of Brown Deer/University School of Milwaukee on Jan. 13 and then finished fourth of nine teams in the Sheboygan Redwing Invitational on Saturday.

In the 99-87 victory at Wauwatosa West to open the week, the Hurricanes finished with 11 first-place performances, including three relay wins.

Will Utech, Lance Mielke and Jake Shackelford won two events and were part of two winning Hurricanes relays.

Utech took first in 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 16.54 seconds and the 100 breaststroke (1:04.71). Mielke won both the 100 freestyle (51.68) and 100 backstroke (58.80), and Shackelford won both the 200 free (1:57.33) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.13).

Utech and Shackelford were on the winning 200 medley relay with Peter Hovel and Adam Lefevre (1:50.90).

Utech and Mielke were on the winning 200 free relay with Ethan Heinrich and Lefevre (1:39.84).

Shackelford and Mielke joined Heinrich and Hovel in the 400 free relay, which took first (3:39.39).

Heinrich, who took first in 50 free (24.45), and Shawn Roll, who took first in 1-meter diving (164.20), were the Hurricanes' other winners.

Redwing invite

Sheboygan South scored 426 points to win the Redwing Invitational on Saturday, while Wauwatosa finished fourth with 334 points.

Shackelford won the 500 free (5:08.87) and finished second in the 200 individual medley (2:08.52), while Mielke took first in the 100 backstroke (56.71) and second in the 100 free (51.82).

Utech was second in the 50 free (23.26) and 100 breaststroke (1:03.36), and Heinrich was fourth in the 100 free (53.52).

Mielke, Utech, Shackelford and Lefevre took second in the 200 medley relay (1:45.08), and Heinrich, Shackelford, Hovel and Mielke were third in the 400 free relay (3:32.92).

The team takes part in the Indians Invitational at Menomonee Falls at 1 p.m. Saturday.
