Girls basketball: Red Raiders run out of gas, lose to Menomonee Falls, 47-34, despite 16 points by Walls; Hamilton next

Jan. 20, 2010 | 0 comments

The Wauwatosa East girls had only one basketball game last week, coming away with a disappointing 47-34 loss at Menomonee Falls on Friday.

"It isn't that we played poorly," Tosa East coach Rob Hamill said. "We just didn't play better."

East (1-4, 3-7), which trailed only 29-23 after three quarters to the Indians (2-3, 4-8), had won two of its last three games.

"Falls is better than their record might indicate and they always make their games against us a major focus," Hamill said. "It was a pretty full gym. They had their junior teams all present, a fundraiser dinner, their pep band and a dance team performance, all of which drew in quite a few people and made the gym pretty full - a great environment to play a game."

The Indians jumped out quickly, leading 10-6 after first quarter and 16-12 at intermission.

"The second half of the fourth quarter we just couldn't muster up the energy to shut Falls down," Hamill said. "Our kids were ready for it and didn't let the crowd get to them, but I think we ran out of gas in the fourth quarter while it was still a close game, and we let them get too many easy opportunities to score.

"Just about every time we were aggressive on either end of the floor, good things happened. When we laid back, not much good happened."

Hamill did have an explanation for his team's performance.

"It was a long week for the kids," he said. "I think the end of the semester academic pressure may have made our players more tired or unfocused during practice, and it carried over to the game a little bit.

"We have to be more consistent with our intensity during the week at practice. If we get that done we will continue to play hard for 32 minutes and have more success in the W-L column."

Cara Walls continued to lead the Red Raiders in scoring, as she had a game-high 16 points. But the next best point total came from Alexa Kramer, who managed five points.

The Red Raiders will now host Sussex Hamilton (2-3, 6-5) and first-place Brookfield Central (5-0, 6-4) on Friday and Tuesday, respectively, at 7:30 p.m.
