Girls basketball: Trojans tied for 2nd in conference

Jan. 19, 2010 | 0 comments

The Wauwatosa West girls basketball team swept two Woodland Conference foes last week, improving to 7-3 in league play and 8-4 overall.

Tosa West handled South Milwaukee, 51-39, on the road Jan. 12 to open the week and then clobbered Greenfield at home, 52-18, to close it out Friday.

The Trojans recovered from a 10-7 first-quarter deficit against the Rockets (3-6, 5-8) by doubling up the score, 18-9, in the second quarter to take a 25-19 lead at intermission.

The Trojans got big-time scoring from point-guard Jackie Glaser, who had four field goals, two 3-pointers and two free throws, to lead the way with a game-high 16 points. Glaser had averaged 4.8 points per game going into the contest.

"It was nice to see her have a breakout game," Tosa West coach Mike Pietrowiak said. "She works so hard. She knocked down some shots, looked to penetrate, put some great moves on. She had about six steals, six assists."

Ashley Ballinger also stepped up with 15 points on a game-high seven baskets, while Jessica Allemang added 13 points. Glaser, Ballinger and Allemang combined to score 44 out of the Trojans' 51 points.

Tosa West shut down the Hustlin' Hawks three days later, allowing only six, two, six and four points in each quarter. The Trojans led 31-8 at intermission and 48-14 after three periods.

Pietrowiak cleared the bench as 10 players made the box score, nine of whom scored. Jenna Engel scored 10 points to lead all scorers. Ballinger and Jenna Lahmann each had eight points and Allemang chipped in seven.

Despite the win, the Trojans continued to struggle from the free-throw line, hitting only 7-of-15 (.467) attempts against South Milwaukee and 5-of-11 (.455) in their game with Greenfield. That was a combined .462 shooting mark (12-26).
