Spaghetti, crosstown rivalry on the menu Saturday

Jan. 12, 2010 | 0 comments

Wauwatosa East High School is the place to be Saturday night. Crosstown rivals Tosa East and Tosa West will meet at 7:30 p.m., and there will be a spaghetti dinner fundraiser sponsored by the Tosa East Athletic Booster Club starting at 5:30 p.m.

Italian food and basketball - it doesn't get better than that.

Going into this week, the Red Raiders were 3-2 in the Greater Metro Conference and 5-7 overall, while the Trojans were 5-3 in the Woodland Conference Black Division and 7-4 overall.

The Red Raiders have dominated the series for so long, no one on either coaching staff can remember the last time the Trojans have won.

"It might have been '97-98, back then some time," Tosa West coach Mike Landisch, a Tosa East graduate, said.

Tosa East coach Tim Arndorfer, a Tosa East grad, couldn't remember either, although he thought it might have been a playoff game.

Based off information on the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Web site - which goes back to 2002 - the Red Raiders have won nine straight games, including two postseason games.

Senior Danny Sayles (12.7 points per game) and sophomore Darrell Bowie (8.3) lead the Red Raiders this season.

The Trojans are led by senior Sam Krenzien (14.8), freshman sensation Anthony Carroll (13.3) and senior Ray Sterling (10.3).

It will be interesting to see how the Trojans react, but I actually think they have the talent to beat the Red Raiders.

But there is the mental factor that the Trojans need to overcome. The Red Raiders are used to winning this game. Tosa West has a losing tradition here that needs to be overcome.

Even during the regular season, Landisch keeps focusing on the fact that his team is getting closer, but it still needs to learn what it takes to win.

I am looking forward to having some spaghetti Saturday evening and then watching the Red Raiders and Trojans go at it one more time.

It should make for an interesting evening.
