Swimming: Tosa falls to Greendale/Greenfield

Dec. 21, 2009 | 0 comments

Despite dropping a 100-86 Woodland Conference dual meet to the Greendale/Greenfield co-op team Dec. 16, Wauwatosa swimmers pleased coach Russ Weigel with their efforts.

"It was a good meet," Weigel said. "It was very close. It came down to the last relay. We are very closely matched.

"Our guys brought everything to the table and really had some great performances."

Junior Jake Shackelford and seniors Lance Mielke and Will Utech were three of the swimmers Weigel was referring to. All three had first- and second-place finishes in the individual events and took part in successful relay performances.

Shackelford was first in the 200-yard freestyle, winning in 1 minute, 58.07 seconds, and was second in the 500 free (5:15.05).

Mielke won the 100 backstroke (59.79) and finished runner-up in the 100 free (52.54).

Utech captured the 100 breaststroke (1:05.34) and was second in the 200 individual medley (2:16).

Utech was also on the winning 200 free relay with Adam Lefevre, Caleb Hernday and Ethan Heinrich (1:38.38) and he was on the second-place 200 medley relay with Mielke, Shackelford and Lefevre (1:48.44).

The 400 free relay of Shackelford, Heinrich, Peter Hovel and Mielke took second (3:40.96).

Heinrich finished second in the 50 free (24.30) and third in the 100 free (55.22) and Shawn Roll was runner-up in the 1-meter diving (161.65).

Lefevre in the 200 free (2:07.12) and the 100 breast (1:15.17); Hovel in the 100 butterfly (1:07.15) and Hernday in the 100 back (1:09.67) all finished third for the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes are now off until Jan. 13 when they host Brown Deer/University School.
