Wauwatosa athlete first at Special Olympics meet

More than 1,000 Special Olympics athletes struck down bowling pins and spiked volleyballs during the 2009 Special Olympics Wisconsin Fall Sports Tournament on Dec. 5 at the Center Court Sports Complex, AMF Waukesha Lanes and the AMF Bowlero Lanes in Milwaukee.

John Wiegand of Wauwatosa took first place in bowling at the tournament.

Milwaukee has hosted this State Competition for the past 29 years. Fall Sports Tournament is just one of five state athletic competitions, which serves 18 different sports, occurring throughout the year for the 10,000 athletes in Wisconsin.

Tosa native named OVC assistant commissioner

Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner Beth DeBauche announced the hiring of Matthew Banker as the Assistant Commissioner for Institutional Services.

Banker, a Wauwatosa native, will begin his duties with the OVC on Jan. 4. He has been an active member and volunteer with the Boys & Girls Club and the Make-a-Wish Foundation. He is a member of the Wisconsin and Indiana State Bar Associations.

Banker received his bachelor of arts degree in print journalism from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., in December 1997. A member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society, Banker was a three-time letter winner for the Tommies football team as a place kicker. Banker received his Juris Doctorate from the Marquette University Law School in May 2001. At Marquette he was the president of the St. Thomas More Society and a member of the Sports Law Society.

Prior to working at the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis, Banker worked at the National Collegiate Athletic Association from 2002 to 2008, first at the national office as the Associate Director of Membership Services and later at the NCAA Eligibility Center as the Associate Director of Academic Review.
