Boys swimming: Tosa improves at invitational

Dec. 8, 2009 | 0 comments

Wauwatosa boys swimming coach Russ Weigel was pleased with his team's performance at the Nicolet Knights Sprint Invitational on Saturday.

"We did very well," he said. "We moved up from 10th place last year to sixth place this year against some very tough competition."

The 100-yard freestyle relay finished third in 45.28 seconds. The team of Lance Mielke, Will Utech, Jake Shackelford and Ethan Heinrich led Wauwatosa.

Utech tied for fourth in the 50 breaststroke (14.5) and Mielke took fifth in the 50 backstroke (26.87) and sixth in the 50 freestyle (26.87). Shackelford was fifth in the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes, 9:59 seconds and sixth in the 100 IM (59.36).

The 400 medley relay was sixth (3:41.96) behind Mielke, Caleb Hernday, Utech, Adam Lefevre, Shackelford, Peter Hovel, Heinrich and Neal Covell.

Heinrich had a huge time drop in the 50 back and 50 free, according to Weigel.

The Hurricanes opened the season with a 113-71 loss to the New Berlin co-op team at New Berlin West on Dec. 2.

Shackelford turned in the top finishes. He won the 200 IM in 2:11.22 and the 500 freestyle in 5:13.68 for Wauwatosa's lone victories.
