Local cagers key national tourney win

Wauwatosa residents Jenna Engel, Eimile Pesch and Jenny Waupoose were part of the Waukesha Flame basketball team that won the ninth-grade girls division of the Rockford Wildcat National Summer Classic AAU tournament Aug. 7 to 9.

The Flame finished 8-0 in winning the tournament. Engel is a student at Wauwatosa West, Pesch attends Brookfield Academy and Waupoose goes to Catholic Memorial.

Other members of the team include Danielle Latt, Jordyn Swann, Rachel Defnet, Ally Mueller, Lauren Mueller, Katie Mueller and Emily Wirth. The Flame is coached by Jim Waupoose, Greg Boettcher and Peter Mueller.

St. Gregory student takes first at Hershey Track Games

A seventh-grader from St. Gregory school in Milwaukee took first place overall at last weekend's Hershey National Track and Field Games in Hershey, PA.

Five hundred and forty athletes participated.

Cal Schultz was one of only five athletes chosen from Wisconsin and the only athlete from Milwaukee to compete in this year's games. Cal's event, the softball throw, highlighted 15 regional athletes. The participants were allowed three throws, the best being measured for final standing.

The competition came down to the final throw where Cal bested the next best thrower by 6 inches with a toss of 184 feet, 2 inches.

The Hershey Chocolate Co. sponsors the National Track and Field games.

Northern Express sets Fastpitch tryouts Saturday

The Northern Express-Wisconsin Girls U18 Fastpitch Softball Club will hold tryouts for the 2010 season Saturday at Divine Savior Holy Angels High School.

The tryouts will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., and the rain date is set for Sunday. The Northern Express is looking to play in four or five tournaments, and they will possibly join a league. Call John Kumbier at (414) 659-4642.

Kids golf free at Wanaki Saturdays in August

Every Saturday in August kids can golf for free after 3 p.m. at Wanaki Golf Course in Menomonee Falls.

Juniors, 17 and under, golf free with a paying adult, and there is a limit of one junior per paying adult. For details, visit www.waukeshacountyparks.com.
