The short-handed Wauwatosa West baseball team continued to struggle last week, losing five more Woodland Conference games.
The Trojans lost a doubleheader at Shorewood on June 23 to open the week (15-9, 7-1) and then lost to Cudahy (17-1) at Breitlow Field on June 25. Coach Chad Mateske's squad then played a split, two-team doubleheader on Friday, losing to New Berlin Eisenhower (10-0) at home and then dropping the nightcap at Brown Deer (9-5).
Mateske was down to 12 varsity players. The winless week left them with a 1-17 overall record, which includes a 1-11 conference mark and a six-game losing streak going into this week.
Junior Sean Akin was injured in the Ike game, and Mateske had to call for help to play the nightcap at Brown Deer.
"We were so short-handed we brought up freshman Tyler Gross to play left field," Mateske said. "In his first at-bat he stroked a single to right and drove in a run.
"We're also moving Chris Lasky from shortstop back to catcher where he is more comfortable," Mateske said.
