Tosa West beats Red Raiders in football opener
Morzinski, Brock, Purifoy sparks 54-0 rout
After dropping a 21-13 decision to Wauwatosa East two years ago, Tosa West coach Matt Good called it the most disappointing loss of his coaching career. Friday night, the Trojans made up for it with a 54-0 romp of the Red Raiders at West in the season opener for both team's.
Last week Good said his team might be faster than last year's speedsters, who depended on big plays in a 9-2 season. It was a familiar story on Friday night.
The Trojans scored four first-down touchdowns and had 67, 45 and 26 yards scores among their seven offensive TDs, while Develyn Ferguson added a 40-yard interception return.
Quarterback Jared Morzinski opened the scoring with a 67-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline to running back Jameson Brock with 5:59 left in the first half. Then Zach Veit intercepted a pass and ran it back 30 yards and RB Greg Lewis scored on a 27-yard run on the next play with 4:05 left in the quarter.
After RB Demaris Purifoy had a 67-yard TD run nullified for holding right before the end of the first quarter, it took the Trojans until 3:41 left in the half to score again when Morzinski tossed a beautiful bomb down the left sideline to Brock for another score and a 21-0 lead.
Purifoy finally got on the board with a 15-yard score with 2:05 left in the half and Morzinski hit Veit in the right corner of the end zone with 57 seconds left for a 35-0 lead.
Purifoy scored with 5:58 in the third quarter on a 2-yard run and then Ferguson made a beautiful interception on the right sideline and raced into the end zone with 1:51 left in the third period for a 48-0 lead.
The final score came after a Matt Lundell interception on the Red Raiders 10-yard line and West scored on the second two runs with RB Josh Soles taking it in from 2-yards out.
East coach Mike Richards lost his star running back Mac James with a terrible elbow injury and then RB Sully Schermerhorn injured his hip and left the game and that left a huge hole in the East running game.
