The halls were packed Friday as Christ King students entertained their special guests for VIP day. Students and visitors shared time in prayer, celebrating Mass together to kick off the afternoon. Afterward, everyone headed to the classrooms, where schoolwork and projects were on display and refreshments were served. The events of the day were an example of the community atmosphere at the school. Many volunteers made it a great afternoon for all.
The third-graders will attend a performance of "Don't Tell Me I Can't Fly" at First Stage Children's Theatre. The story highlights themes of acceptance, differences, courage, family and unconditional love.
An open house and social will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Local rock band I'm Not A Pilot will perform a free concert at the school at 7 p.m. Nov. 16. Known for their unique instrumentation, which replaces the traditional electric guitar with the electric cello, I'm Not A Pilot was voted Best Rock Band in the Shepard Express Best of Milwaukee 2010 Awards, and Band of the Year in the 88.9 FM Radio Milwaukee 2011 Milwaukee Music Awards. The band is also nominated for two 2011 Wisconsin Area Music Industry awards.
Parents can discuss school issues with Principal Lori Lester while enjoying a cup of coffee from 8:10 to 9 a.m. Nov 15.
During a recent all-school assembly, fourth-grade students in Mary Beth Mills' class recited the poem "Books." They also explained the poem's meaning and use of metaphors. Middle school students have submitted their Term I research papers and delivered oral presentations in literature, history and religion classes. Topics ranged from World War I, to virtues and moral development, to analysis of novels by Ray Bradbury, Charles Dickens, Daniel Defoe and J.R.R. Tolkien. On All Saints' Day, a large display of statues and relics of various saints was an impressive addition to the Holy Day Mass. Students in grades seven and eight played All Saints Bingo and participated in a Saint ID contest, which was won by Keara Tuttle, an eighth-grader from Mequon. Second-place was shared by eighth-graders Andy Swietlik of Elm Grove and Katie Cobb of Brookfield. On All Souls' Day, students displayed photos in remembrance of their deceased family members. Eighth-grade students also were instrumental in the success of Mercy Academy's recent auction. Students provided valuable assistance during the event, while also taking time to join their parents on the dance floor. Live Frank-Sinatra-style music was provided by Chris Mariani and His Fabulous Band.
Our Redeemer Lutheran
Teachers in grades three, four and five are attending an educator class at First Stage Milwaukee. Their involvement includes stage performances for their students. Included with the teacher class are lessons brought to ORLC by First Stage performers.
A Veterans Day Assembly will be held at 9 a.m. Friday. The assembly will feature the Marquette University ROTC Naval Color Guard, singing of the national anthem, recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, the President's Proclamation and a showing of the video "Why We Celebrate Veterans Day." Chuck Hoffman, who served two years in the Army and with the First Air Cavalry Division in Vietnam as a machine gunner in a rifle company, will speak. Years later, Hoffman enlisted in the Wisconsin Air National Guard, retiring in 1999 as a senior master sergeant. Chief Michael Presti, who has been serving on active duty with the Coast Guard since January 1995 and currently works as a boatswains mate chief, also will speak.
In partnership with the House of Peace, a Catholic charitable program in the central city, the Service Club is sponsoring a Thanksgiving food collection. Classes within St. Joe's will gather food to fill one, two or three boxes, according to a requested menu provided by the House of Peace. Anyone interested in filling a box for this drive is welcome to come to the school office to pick up a box or two.
St. Jude the Apostle
Third-grade students dressed as saints led a procession into Mass to commemorate the feast of All Saints on Nov. 1. Also, an open house for prospective new families will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 17. Teachers, students and parents will lead tours throughout the day.
Parent-teacher conferences will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Nov. 17. No classes will be held this day. In other news, the Roaring Twenties auction was held in the St. Pius X gym on Saturday. St. Pius X and St. Bernard parishes came together and celebrated for the good of the jointly supported school. More than 80 people volunteered over the course of the last six weeks to bring the event together.
Wauwatosa East High
"Still Strong." The East High School Red Raider Marching Band has been invited to perform their arrangement of patriotic music, Still Strong, at the Washington Park Senior Center, 4420 W. Vliet St., on Friday. Still Strong was created to honor Sarah Pease, a band member who passed away in July 2011 after a courageous battle with leukemia, and also in commemoration of the victims of the 9/11 attacks.
Wauwatosa West High
West's Scholarship Night will be held at the Crowne Plaza at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Parents will have an opportunity to discuss Wilson/STEM School happenings and concerns with Principal Jenny Keats during the Principal's Coffee at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
