Students prepared for the season of Lent with a Mardi Gras celebration in school Tuesday. The eighth-grade students set up and ran the games and activities for the younger children, who purchased tickets for a nominal fee. There also was a raffle for toys, games, gift baskets and more, all donated by school families.
To celebrate the success of the school and promote school spirit, the Student Council is hosting Spirit Week. Each day this week students and teachers will show their support via a differing theme. The week began with Pajama Day.
The new school mascot is the Jaguar.
High Interest Day, which gives students an opportunity to attend a variety of fun and educational presentations, is Friday.
The school's forensics team took part in a meet Friday.
Ray Guarendi, a popular parenting expert, radio host, author and psychologist, was the guest speaker at the annual dinner at the Italian Conference Center on Friday. After a presentation in his humorous and practical style, "Dr. Ray" autographed his books, including the best-selling "You're A Better Parent Than You Think You Are." In other news, each member of the forensics team received a blue ribbon during their first competition of the season. Team members are Mary Rose Courchaine, John Paul Elfelt, Charlie Gutierrez, Charlie Klein, Matt Murphy, Keara Tuttle and Emily Wichgers.
Our Redeemer Lutheran
Students have been busy even after school hours. After-school classes in Mad Science, Checkmates (chess club), crafting and soon First Stage drama keep students challenged and busy in off school hours.
Students are busy with activities. They will attend the Ash Wednesday service at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 22. The fifth- and sixth-graders will attend a Milwaukee Symphony Youth Concert on Feb. 23. Some students are representing the school at a Primary Spelling contest and a Band Solo and Ensemble contest on Saturday.
St. Jude the Apostle
Each year the Knights of Columbus conduct both spelling and math competitions. St. Jude students won first place in both math and spelling. Jacob Webb won first place in math at the eighth-grade level. Patrick English was the first-place winner for seventh-grade, and Natalie Sanchez won first place in spelling for sixth grade. The next level of competition will take place Saturday at St. Catherine's High School in Racine.
Students can try out for the school talent show from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Feb. 27 and 28 in the gym. The talent show will be held March 23 at 1:30 and 7 p.m.
Students are 100 days smarter. Students brought in 100 items from home, made paper chains with 100 links and estimated how far 100 steps would take them to celebrate the 100th day of the school year.
Wauwatosa East High
The turnabout dance will be held Saturday evening.
Students participated in classes at the Milwaukee County Zoo on Tuesday that correlated to the science curriculum.
Wauwatosa West High
The turnabout dance was held Saturday.
Alice in Dairyland presented "Growing a Healthy Wisconsin" to fourth-graders on Monday.
