Is there a rumor you've heard that you would like to track down? Is there something in the city — like playground equipment or a pothole — that needs to be fixed? Rick Romano answers some of the mysteries of life in Wauwatosa and helps solve everyday problems.
Why is there a blocked parking lot next to the new BelAir Cantina?
Question: A reader is wondering why there are concrete cones blocking entrances to the paved lot at the southwest corner of 68th Street and North Avenue, just east of the BelAir Cantina restaurant. "I'm curious about the story behind the management of this prime real estate," the reader wrote.
Status: The parking lot belongs to the owner of the property directly across 68th Street that houses H&R Block and Subway.
Walter Tolocko, an agent of the Freehold LLC ownership, refused to give details about the status of the lot. He said the ownership purchased the lot 20 years ago because the city required more parking for the business property.
Tosa Development Department Director Paulette Enders confirmed off-street parking regulations have changed recently and said the city issued BelAir a conditional-use permit for its handful of parking spaces behind the building.
Betsy Gilmore, BelAir Cantina's general manager, said the parking lot owner offered to sell it to the restaurant but the business owners felt the price was too high.
"Our hope is that the city would buy the property someday and turn it into a municipal lot," Gilmore said. "It could be used by everyone, and this area could use the parking."
