Businesses that cater to stylish bargain shoppers and expectant mothers are opening in Wauwatosa.
Two upscale consignment boutiques have made their way to the East Town neighborhood, joining U-Turn, a similar boutique that opened last year at 69th Street and North Avenue.
Hushiii Beauty
Part spa, part boutique, Hushiii Beauty is meant to serve as an oasis where people can relax and shop, said Latrina Cain, who opened the new business at 6439 W. North Ave. last weekend.
The Wauwatosa resident is mixing her love for fashion and her skills as a licensed esthetician. People can shop for gently used True Religion jeans and an Ann Taylor sweater, then head into the salon room for facials, waxing, or makeup or false eyelash applications. When it's all done, the customer has the makings for a night on the town, Cain explained.
Cain has shopped at some of the Milwaukee area's best boutiques, and is excited to have opened her own. She's working with a number of consignors, but she's still looking to line up a few more so she has a wide mix of styles.
"I want to make sure I have everyone's flavor," she said.
When customers arrive, she will provide tea or coffee - except on the weekends, when she'll serve wine during happy hour.
Studio 48
On Saturday, Studio 48 will open its doors at 7219 W. North Ave. Owner Cynthia Jashinske will sell gently used designer-label clothing, accessories and collectibles, as well new pieces.
"One side of the store will be new, and one side will be used," she said.
The business name commemorates this point in Jashinske's life - at age 48 - when she is able to achieve her goal of business ownership.
"I have always dreamed of having a women's clothing store since I was a little girl," she said.
Her daughter and niece also are "fashion fanatics," and they will be helping her around the store. Her granddaughter may even sell some of her handmade jewelry in the shop.
Jashinske said there's an opportunity for North Avenue to become a destination for the fashion and financially conscious.
"Hopefully it will bring more people to the area," she said. "We will probably all have a different (product) mix."
Proud to Introduce
Over in the Village, Proud to Introduce portrait studio will open at 1417 Wauwatosa Ave., next to the Breadsmith, Feb. 1.
Owner/photographer Allie Gadziemski specializes in photos of newborn babies, pregnant women and families with small children. She recommends parents bring in their new bundles of joy within the first 10 days of life, because they're still trying to curl up like they did in the womb.
"It takes a lot of patience waiting for the tiny babies to feel comfortable and relaxed," she said. "We don't want to see crying."
For the parents, shots of pregnant bellies and infant portraits capture a "fleeting time" in their family's progression.
For the past two years, Proud to Introduce has been operating in Brookfield's Stonewood Village. But Gadziemski wanted a tighter-knit business community, and, as a Wauwatosa resident, she believed she could find that closer to home.
