Students walk out of class at Tosa East

March 11, 2011

Forty to 50 students at Wauwatosa East High School participated in a national walkout today to protest the elimination of public employee collective-bargaining rights and cuts to schools in Gov. Scott Walker's biennial budget.

The students left school at 2 p.m., with about 10 minutes left in sixth period, said Chris Preisler, district communications director. The students left the school and headed toward the library and City Hall before returning to campus, he said.

Some of the students' parents called in to excuse their absences, but the school is still trying to sort out which students were or were not excused. Those students who weren't excused will be marked truant, and they will have to serve detention to make up the class time they missed.

Being marked truant could also affect the students' ability to exempt final exams, Preisler said.

The walkout was apparently organized by a Madison-based student group.

No students walked out at Wauwatosa West, Preisler said.
