Nicole and Robert Winter of Wauwatosa are the parents of Ellenor Jo Winter, born July 25, 2011, at Community Memorial Hospital, Menomonee Falls. She was 6 pounds, 15 ounces, and 19.5 inches long. She joins sisters Kaitlyn, 3, and Breanna, 1.
Kathryn Finley of Wauwatosa, a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School, has been awarded the Virginia A. Pomeroy Scholarship by the Association for Women Lawyers Foundation.
Adam Warner of Wauwtosa, a senior at St. Norbert College in De Pere, has been named to the Student Government Association executive board for the 2011-12 school year as vice president for student relations.
Melanie Zaferos, a 2008 graduate of Wauwatosa West High School, received the George Koeppel Scholarship from the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The scholarship for the 2011-12 academic year is based on academic achievement by a student from Milwaukee County who wants to work in elementary education.
Holly Schmidt of Wauwatosa was awarded a Sonja Marie Bengtson Endowed Scholarship by the University of Wisconsin-Stout Foundation. She is studying apparel design and development. SCHOOLSCENE
The following seniors are semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program-an honor achieved by fewer than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors-after taking the 2010 Preliminary sat/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as juniors: from Wauwatosa East High School, Tracy Johnson; and from Wauwatosa West High School, Ellyn Kirtley, Natalie Mullins and Alexandra Utech.
Gregory Rajala of Wauwatosa, associate professor of biomedical sciences at Marquette University in Milwaukee, recently received the university's highest teaching honor, the John P. Raynor Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence. Rajala teaches gross anatomy to students in the College of Health Sciences and School of Dentistry. Rajala received his bachelor's degrees in biology from the University of Colorado and in physical therapy from Marquette. He earned his doctorate in anatomy from the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he also teaches as an adjunct faculty member. A former member of the U.S. speed skating sports medicine team, Rajala was previously active in research into the cardiovascular system and muscle performance in elite athletes.
