Fergal Patrick Gallagher of Wauwatosa died Aug. 2, 2009, at age 71 while enjoying riding his bike.
He was born Dec. 2, 1937, on the Island of Jersey, Channel Islands, to John Francis Gallagher and Katherine Beryl O'Brien. He married Marie T. (nee Schmidt) on July 18, 1964, in Riverside, Iowa.
In 1956, after growing up in Ireland, Fergal came to the United States. He attended Marquette University, later transferring to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. Continuing his education he received his master's degree and doctorate degree in English literature from UW-Madison. He began his professional career by teaching at Centenary College in Shreveport, La., where he taught for the next 10 years.
In 1979, he returned to Milwaukee. Fergal served many organizations in various positions, including the East Town Association, Wauwatosa Chamber of Commerce, Penfield Children's Center and most recently the Benedict Center. He celebrated his Irish heritage by hosting a weekly radio program called "Radio Eireann" and was a very active member for many years with Irish Fest.
He is survived by his children, Michael (fiancée Katia De Siqueira) Gallagher of London and Katherine (Kevin) Manning of Dublin, Ireland; grandchildren, Cillian and Aoife Manning; sister, Maeve (Louis) McRedmond of Dublin; sister- and brothers-in-law, Marilyn (Richard) Musser, LeRoy (Judy), Bernard (the late Donna), William (Beth) and Carl (Denise Doss) Schmidt; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his sibling, Nuala (the late Gerald) Corr.
Funeral Mass was Aug. 8 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Wauwatosa.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.
Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral & Cremation Services handled the arrangements.
