John R. Petersen died June 4, 2009.
He was born in Stoughton and lived in Wisconsin for 80 years. A 1954 graduate of the University of Wisconsin Medical School, John was at ease as a father, physician, mentor, friend, musician, grammarian and occasional prankster.
Drawing on his core skills after serving the medical system of Milwaukee County for more than 30 years primarily as the medical director, he became an advocate for international health care as part of USAID. He served in many capacities to advance public health through the county and state medical societies. John and Yvonne were founding members of the Unitarian Church West.
He is survived by his wife, Yvonne; children, John (Cheryl), Robert (Cathy), David (Carol), Greggar (Joan) and Anne (Eric Fisher); eight grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Memorial service for John will be held on Sunday, June 21, at 1 p.m. at Unitarian Universalist Church West, 13001 W. North Ave., Brookfield.
Memorials are suggested to the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.
