Marvin E. "Marv" Race of Wauwatosa died May 30, 2009, at age 92.
He served in World War II as an ambulance platoon leader, following the first Army all through Europe after D-Day, taking the dead and wounded to field hospitals. After returning home, he was one of the founders and the first commander of American Legion Post 449 in Elm Grove.
He was going to make life insurance his career when his friend, Gen. Collins Ferris, asked him to be his medical administrative officer for the newly formed Wisconsin Air National Guard, and soon after he was activated again in the service for the Korean War. After that, he stayed in the Guard, completing 25 years of military service.
He was in the insurance business for more than 30 years. He also was one of the original officers of the Elm Grove Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Geraldine Gebhard Race; children, Barbara Rymer and Marji (Pat) Bolton; grandchildren, Bonnie (Mark) Escamilla, Lee Marvin and Valentine Van Houten, and Andy Bolton; three great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and daughter, Nancy Van Houten.
The funeral service was June 3. Private interment was at Wisconsin Memorial Park.
