Jane Judith Smith (nee Meigs) of Wauwatosa died Dec. 29, 2008, at age 83 after a prolonged illness.
She was born Nov. 6, 1925, and was dedicated to her children and grandchildren. She was a familiar figure in the stands at countless football, basketball and soccer games over many years. At any activity involving family, Grandma Jane was there. The only things she might have enjoyed as much were playing bridge with her friends, painting or enjoying an afternoon in the garden.
She was a 1949 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she met James "Bud" Smith, her husband. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi. After graduating from UW-Madison, she worked as an occupational therapist, specializing in the mental health field for many years. She was a devout Roman Catholic who loved her faith.
She is survived by her children, Steve (Mary Beth), Judy (Paul) Dalecky, Jim (Mary Pat), Tom (Brenda) and Matthew (Mary Caye); grandchildren, Sarah, Lindsey, Katie (Chapman), Annie, Bill, Tommy, Conor, Jake, Julie, Laura, Molly, Nolan and Regan; great-grandchildren, Ellery Jane and Molly; cousin, Alice Linehan; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James "Bud" Smith; and sisters, Patty (Bob) Rauh, JoAnne (Jay Buck) Thorsen and Mary Gee (John) Volkert.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 2 at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Parish. Graveside services were at St. Mary's Cemetery, Elm Grove.
Memorials are suggested.
The family thanks Dr. Tim Vellinga, Sue Joyce and the staff at the Wisconsin Heart Hospital.
Becker Ritter Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
