Check Mate! Diane Dehmer, Corrine and Colonel Ollis marvel the the handmade chess set by Hart Park Senior Center member Carol Karps displayed in the talent gallery at The Center's "Evening To Remember" dinner. Inspiration for the project came from an "Easy To Make" magazine article. Karps' mother and friends collected the wooden spools for 3-4 years plus a year to paint. "Easy To Make"--it wasn't!

Collector Dan Bantz calls Rosaline Brojanac and Rob Zirbel's attention to one of the 40 specimen boxes he brought to Hart Park Senior Center for his lecture on "Moths & Butterflies." Bantz explains that the orange and black color of Monarchs tell birds that they're poison if eaten. Nature has given each of the 800-875 species a "gimmick" to help them survive.

(Zoological Society of Milwaukee, October 2012)—Helen Boomsma (far left), of Wauwatosa, chats with Craig Bennett, of Milwaukee, while their friend Christine Baranoucky gets a sample from the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company. Bill Marquardt (right), of New Berlin, served the trio beer samples at the Zoological Society of Milwaukee’s Zoo Brew event at the Milwaukee County Zoo. The Oct. 25 event attracted a sold-out crowd of 655 people to the Milwaukee County Zoo. More than 20 breweries participated, offering guests samples of American lagers, hoppy IPAs and seasonal pumpkin ales. Milwaukee-area eateries provided pub-friendly fare such as white cheddar mac ‘n cheese, pulled pork sliders and desserts. Guests could also enter into a raffle for brewery packs, restaurant certificates, and Zoo memberships. MillerCoors contributed major support for the event; proceeds benefited the Zoo’s 2012-2013 annual appeal.

The conservation event attracted more than 18,200 people to the Zoo either May 19 or 20. Many activities focused on polar bears, including tree planting to create the Zoo’s own Polar Bear Forest and polar-bear-themed play performances. Kid-friendly music was sponsored by Coleman Repellents.

Emily and her family were at the Zoo for Family Free Day, sponsored by North Shore Bank and FOX 6. The event offered zoogoers free admission (not including parking), and more than 36,850 people came to the Zoo on a warm, summerlike day. The attendance set a record and caused some traffic backups. Zoogoers also could ride the North Shore Bank Safari Train or hop on the Sky Safari for a bird’s-eye view of the animals. Emily liked the kid-friendly activities in the Zoo’s octagon Dairy Barn.

Hart Park Senior Center's annual spring tea welcomed "Gladys Wheeler" (impersonated by professional speaker Christine Brooks). Wheeler was from one of first families in Wauwatosa's history. Wheeler (right) points out the members of her family to Advisory Board Chairman Eileen Olen. The Wheeler family came to the area the year after Charles Hart built his first building. Wheeler graduated as Validictorian of her Wauwatosa High School class and later returned to teach English there. She lived at 1839 Wauwatosa Avenue in a home that was built 2 years after the great fire flattened the city in 1899. The Wauwatosa Historical Society opened their records to Ms. Brooks.

With major support from Downer Avenue Wine & Spirits, MillerCoors and Purple Feet Wines, the evening raised funds to install Web cams in the Zoo (the ZSM’s 2012 annual appeal project). The cameras will allow people to view some of the more active animals from their smartphone, tablet, or home computer. Guests also could take a walk in the Stearns Family Apes of Africa and Primates of the World buildings to hang with the Zoo’s resident primates.

Two students from Pius XI High School raked leaves as a part of the 21st Annual Make a Difference Day in Milwaukee on Saturday, November 5. More than 1,000 volunteers spent the morning raking leaves, washing windows and cleaning up yards to help over 350 older adults prepare for the winter months. One third of all older adults live alone, and many cannot complete these outdoor tasks. Make a Difference Day, in collaboration between the Volunteer Center of Greater Milwaukee, a service of the Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee, and Interfaith Older Adult Programs, was created to help older adults remain independent and in their own homes.
