Lions' balance key in conference opening win

Nov. 23, 2013 12:18 p.m. | Right from the start, Wauwatosa West’s strategy went out of the window, resulting with a 75-54 loss to New Berlin Eisenhower on Friday in the Woodland West Division opener at West.

“Part of our game plan was shot from the opening tip,” Trojans coach Chad Stelse said. “We wanted to contain Reed (Timmer) and shut down everyone else and I have to give them a ton of credit – Reed’s supporting staff played very well today.”

Yes they did, as the Lions worked the ball, found the open man and were in command the entire game.

Timmer finished with a team-high 23 points, but 11 came in garbage time in the final period, as he sank 9-of-10 free throws and had Ike’s final basket.

The Lions took a 22-6 lead in the first period, as eight players scored, 2-4 points. Their balance was great, as Timmer led the way with seven points followed by Brett Hanson and Ben Uelner with six each and Jack Sirek and Bennett Kohlhard with five apiece.

Children's Hospital back to normal, official says

Nov. 15, 2013 3:48 p.m. | Children's Hospital of Wisconsin resumed normal operations as of 2 p.m. Thursday, and Chief Medical Officer Michael Gutzeit said Friday that during the two hours the hospital was locked down as police investigated the presence of a man with a gun in the neonatal ward, "essential services were still being provided, uninterrupted to our most critical patients."

Gutzeit, addressing a Friday press conference, said the hospital is conducting an after-action review to identify "how systems worked and what we can do better."

He did not say whether the hospital would install metal detectors, and he would not address the police action in and near the ward that led to the apprehension of the suspect.

"Our security plan is well-tested and yesterday's events gave us confidence in our ability to effectively respond," he said.

Every in-patient room has been visited by nursing or counseling staff, "checking in on how families are doing and providing support to those who require additional emotional care."

Children's Hospital issued the all-clear

"There is no danger to patients, families or employees. Operations have resumed as normal. At approximately noon today, law enforcement responded to the 7th floor of Children's Hospital. The situation was immediately contained by police.

"In accordance with our emergency response plan, Children's activated its active shooter protocol, which placed all Children's buildings on lockdown with employees and patients sheltered in place."
