An Ode to Kraut - Or The Odious Cabbage
I was determined to make sauerkraut.
Public Citizen #1: Lois Weber
Like me, you probably keep hearing people say things they assume everyone believes to be true but you are pretty sure. . . aren't.
One that's gnawing at me is "it's easier than ever to participate in the democratic process."
Growing Old with Brett Favre

Interestingly enough, Brett Favre and I have a couple of things in common: 1) We have big birthdays coming up this month, although Brett’s seems more nationally significant and mine is merely the end of an era. 2) We’re both battling the same demons – time and gravity – and those two are perhaps scarier than a blindside defensive blitz. Nevertheless, as Brett and I begin our “farewell tours,” I can’t help but consider the implications.
1st and 2nd Grade Students Voice Packer Predictions on TMJ4
The six and seven year olds at St. Bernard are just so sad that Brett isn't on the Packers anymore.
They were asked for commentary on Monday during "Packer Spirit Day".
Hello, Wauwatosa
Hello, Wauwatosa.
As if I don't have enough to do, I've decided to write an occasional blog to share my thoughts with you, as a Wauwatosa alderman and concerned citizen, about issues affecting my hometown that just aren't getting fully discussed elsewhere.
Grimm's Fairy Tales
The first volume of Grimm’s Fairy Tales was not written for children. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm collected and edited the fairy tales as a way to preserve German culture and heritage in the face of the French takeover of the German state of
Indulge Your Inner Carnivore
Some time ago I stopped at Metcalf's Sentry on the way home from the day job. Ribs were on my mind and ribs I bought for smoking on the Weber Kettle. Out of the corner of my eye I spied some pork tenderloins. They were on sale - some sort of Manager's Special - and they called out to me. So I took those home along with the ribs. They've been sitting in the freezer ever since.
Yesterday I decided to do something about getting them out of the freezer and on the table.
Open House and Ice Cream Social
St. Bernard Parish School is hosting an Open House and Ice Cream Social this Thursday, October 15th, 2009.
Tasty sundaes will go for $1.00 compliments of the Home and School Association.
Let it begin with me
You've probably heard (and maybe made) indignant arguments in the face of President Obama's premature winning of the Nobel Peace Prize. Christopher Hitchens in Newsweek makes the "he's not worthy" argument.
"Here we have the Nobel committee's first 'virtual' award," he said, referring to the committee spokesman's statement that the award is sometimes given not for things accomplished but to enhance work underway.
Block Watch Captain Vacancies
Below is a list of existing block watches that do not have an active captain; because the neighborhoods listed have already established Block Watches most of the work has already been done. The new captain will simply be responsible for distributing the quarterly newsletter after the packet is delivered to your door. We also encourage, although not required, the new captain to host a refresher neighborhood watch meeting where a Wauwatosa Police Officer will come out and discuss information important to your neighborhood and the City.
If you can help or know of someone in your neighborhood who may be interested in delivering the Tosa Watch Newsletter four times a year, please call Laura at the Wauwatosa Police Department's Community Support Division at 471-8430, Ext 5111
Deer Camp Dispatch - Porkulus
Things were looking rather grim this morning. Gray skies, 40 degrees and rain.
Vast flocks of cranes flying overhead and raising a heckuva racket as they staged for their winter migration.
Deer Camp Dispatch - Out Comes the Jägermeister
More rain this morning - precisely at shooting time. But not as cold.
Hunting activity seems to have picked-up with more shooting in the distance and from neighboring woodlots.
LEGO CLUB!
On October 1st St.Bernard school kicked off its first LEGO Club! For the first club individuals brought their favorite legos to show to everyone. Then groups made LEGO creations using various size pieces and their imaginations. It was a great time! Many upcoming themes for future club meetings, including a trip to the LEGO Discovery Center in Schaumburg, IL!
Trick or Treat Safety
Every year we are reminded about Trick or Treat safety, and yes, this year I am going to remind you yet again. Please take a few moments to review the list and discuss the appropriate items with your children before venturing out in search of sugary treats.
On the trail again
Hey it's GRRRREEEEAAAAATTTT to be back!
But I'm not sure where to start... where I left off? That would've been a blog about all the Asian beetles swarming my windows last year.
Materialist? Who, me?
I just hung up with a collection agency, which was kindly checking the whereabouts of a "missed" payment that I owed some company.
That's just a little bit depressing. Fortunately for me, I paid it three days ago! Ha!
You Love Him, You Hate Him
You love him, you hate him...either way come watch on a big screen TV, your Green Bay Packers sack the OLD #4 and cream the Vikings!
