Sky's the Limit

I see Raiders-Bay in sectional opener next Thursday

Tosa East and Tosa West boys basketball

Too many times people make the mistake that Division 1 is better than Division 2. After all, being No. 1 is better than being No. 2.

When the WIAA bounced Wauwatosa East into Division 2 last summer, I spoke with coach Tim Arndorfer, who always seems to have a tough sectional to deal with, but he didn’t like the move at all.

So let’s have some fun and take a look at the regional/sectional brackets that the local teams are in.

The Red Raiders (15-7) and Whitefish Bay (14-8) are the top seeds in the upper bracket of Sectional #4. Tosa East finished second behind Marquette in the Greater Metro Conference and Bay tied for second in the North Shore Conference with Homestead behind Germantown.

The top seeds in the lower half of the bracket are New Berlin West (18-4), who won the Woodland Conference Blue Division, and Wisconsin Lutheran (20-2), winner of the Wisconsin Little 10.
A closer look at the regional that Tosa East and Wauwatosa West (12-10) are in shows they have an easier road to the finals than if they were in the lower bracket.

The Red Raiders, who drew a first-round bye, meets the winner of the Milwaukee Lutheran (7-13) vs. Milwaukee Custer (4-18) game. Tosa West hosts Milwaukee Madison (8-14) in the first round and if the Trojans win, they will face Milwaukee Samuel Morse-Marshall (9-10) in the second round.

I am looking forward to the possible meeting of the Trojans and Eagles in the second round because I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall in that seeding meeting. Sorry, folks, but something happened in that meeting didn’t make sense to me for the Trojans to be the third seed while the Eagles got the second.

But then I’m a dumb sportswriter and not an intelligent basketball coach, who do this for a living.

Before my next statement, I need to put a qualifier out there. If the ‘right’ Red Raiders and Trojans team shows up for the games, I can guarantee you will see a rematch of the local teams in the regional finals Saturday at 7 p.m. at Brookfield Central.

By ‘right’ teams I am talking about the teams that play up to their talent level, in the Trojans’ case maybe a little over it. If either of them think they can toss the ball on the court and the other teams will run away and forfeit they will be in trouble.

There is certainly enough talent on the Red Raiders to make it to Saturday night. Same with Mike Landisch’s squad, which has won seven of its last nine games, including two wins over Whitnall and one over South Milwaukee, both teams better than any of the competition in this bracket of the regional.
The Red Raiders’ and Trojans’ toughest battle in their bracket should be among themselves before you get to the sectional.

I like Whitefish Bay to make it to the regional finals Saturday and I wouldn’t be surprised if third-seeded Nicolet (13-9) upsets second-seeded Brown Deer (14-8). But like I said of the local schools, Nicolet must bright it’s ‘A’ game for that to happen.

Not that I’m going out a limb, but I see the Red Raiders facing Whitefish Bay at the Al McGuire Center next Thursday for a 6 p.m. game.

Lancers, Trojans face last stand?

girls basketball

Perhaps the Brookfield Central and Wauwatosa West girls basketball teams will feel like Custer (the General, not the school) did at Little Big Horn.

If the Lancers and the Trojans hope to win in the sectional semi-finals Thursday night and make it to the sectional finals, they are going to have their hands full.  If they want to make it to state, the road looks even bumpier.
