Alumni Making A Difference In Central America!

ALUMNI, Spanish

My name is Megan Heinen and I am a St Bernard alumni and current sophomore in the College of Nursing at Marquette University. This Fall I was chosen to go on a medical-based service trip to the Latin American country of Honduras through a program called Global Medical Brigades.  I will be gone for 8 days doing a number of daily "brigades" to various communities setting up one-day clinics and offering medicines and basic medical aid.

I was thrilled to be given this opportunity because it combines three of the things that I am most passionate about: Nursing and Spanish (my two majors!) and service to others.  The values that I learned at St. Bernard grade school and that were reinforced through Tri-Parish activities like the Appalachian Service Project and service hours at DSHA have helped instill this value of service in me, while the incredible example of my mother sparked my interest in a possible career in healthcare.

However, this trip does come with its own set of complications.  While I should be studying for exams and enjoying my holiday season, I also have to worry about getting all my vaccinations up to date as well as fundraising the increasing expense of international travel.  Furthermore, we bring all medical supplies and equipment with us, including the medicines that we leave with the families as much as our donations allow.

This is where I am reaching out to the Wauwatosa Community.  If anyone- a doctor, nurse, dentist, medical supplier-  has access to medicines of any kind, please feel free to email me at to donate! Even prescription medicines are accepted but the items we have most need for are very basic items that probably come in a two-pack at Target, Walgreens or Sams Club.  Why not stock up for the cold season and give the extra bottle to people who really need it? If anyone would like to donate these items: reading glasses, ibuprofen, antacids like Tums, "One A Day" vitamins/minerals, and especially cough/cold medicines, feel free to drop them off in the St. Bernard parish office!  Additionally, tax deductible monetary donations can be made out to "Marquette University- Global Medical Brigades" and then dropped off in the parish office or sent directly to the following address:

I personally have witnessed the immense generosity throughout my life as a member of this wonderful village.   I cannot wait for my trip to come (and I promise to update you all on how it goes when I come back!!), but mostly, I cannot thank you all enough for your continuous support both for me and for this wonderful cause. God Bless and Happy Holidays!
