Gardening Style French or English?

Your garden is a reflection of soul and psyche just as gardening can enrich your life. When looking at a yard, I ask myself: “does this homeowner prefer English gardens such as a knot garden or French in the style of Monet?” Is order preferred or rambling? From this, I glean some knowledge of the homeowner's personality or what is going on in their life. When a once perfectly manicured yard falls into disarray, you may wonder, “what is the cause?”

A Mother's Day Surprise

Critters, Life In Tosa

As of Monday afternoon only two birds could be found in my hanging basket.

My presumption is their three brethren have already fledged.  It is unlikely a predator could gain a foothold on the basket-full of asparagus fern.  If it could it would have likely taken the entire brood.

Tosa's Quirky Treasures

It’s only natural to love Tosa for the beautiful homes, good schools, and great restaurants and shops, but ya gotta love its more offbeat amenities too. Here are a few that come to mind:

1. Ted’s. It’s a slice of 1950s small-town America. The waitresses really make an effort to get to know your name and usual high-cholesterol order. But the oddball appeal of Ted’s is the unapologetic eavesdropping and free-for-all conversations at the horseshoe-shaped counters.

Flag Day

Some years ago one April, my offer to buy a home on Betsy Ross Place was accepted.  The realtor asked when to close the deal, saying we needed six weeks.  "Why, June 14th of course!" I replied.  "On what day other than Flag Day would you buy a house on Betsy Ross Place?"

Call me corny, but, like Johnny Cash, I love that "Ragged Old Flag."  (On Flag Day in 1977, I was fortunate to see Johnny perform that song in the chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C.)  When my Dad, a World War II veteran, used to take me to Wauwatosa's Memorial Day and July 4th celebrations, he always made me stand tall and put my hand over my heart when Old Glory passed by.  I have taught my kids the same lesson.

Dears Crossing Ahead

School's out.    Throw out the schedules.  Lose the backpacks.  Put all the unused reams of paper and pencils in a good storage place so you can forget them and buy all new ones in the fall.  But don't forget to mentally say a big thank you to all who helped throughout the school year.  Educators, principals, aides and volunteers - yes but I'm talking about someone who worked on the front lines.   Crossing guards.

Throughout this past year, my driving schedule has had me going down North Ave. at a different time than usual and I have to take my hat off to those brave souls who stand against the impatient, crazy drivers with only their stop sign as protection.  Besides my hat I give double honors to the guards who work the intersections where there are no lights.  Bad enough to be fighting with "right turn on red after pretending to stop" drivers but to actually have to step off the curb and walk into the middle of North Avenue holding your sign and hoping people look up from their phones and cappucinos and come to a stop is beyond brave.   I have seen many cars slam on their brakes but at least realize they are supposed to stop.  On two different occasions I saw a car never slow down (the conversation on the phone didn't seem to slow down either) but luckily both times the children were almost across and the crossing guard close enough to the middle to jump out of the way.   Horns honking and people screaming seemed to make no difference to those drivers.

Questions and Answers

Question: I cut down a huge pine tree and would like to replace it with a lilac. Also...have you tried the new yellow Knockout? I have Double Knockout and really like it. .

FG Answer: I'm not a big rose grower, only Carefree Wonders or Grandma Irene's wild roses. What are you trying to achieve? There are so many cool lilacs out there. Always keep winter interest in mind.

Dandelions, clover and crab grass, what is the best way to get rid of this?
Frugal Gardener: Start over! In beds, burn it out with Round up or a generic and let it really die ( takes 1-2 weeks in this weather and you're further north. ) It will kill the roots and eventually shrivel up and die!
