Today’s new moms have it pretty good. I was at a baby shower recently and was amazed by the incredible new inventions (the Pee-pee Teepee), conveniences (the Diaper Genie) and designer diaper bags. (My diaper bag looked like ugly luggage.) Plus, new moms have the internet and sites like Milwaukee Moms, which I can only assume is a lifesaver when you’re hunkered down alone with a colicky baby.

Not to sound old, but back when my kids were babies, I was just grateful for cable television, especially at 2:00 am. Gosh, that was so long ago.

Life Instruction Manual for Graduates

Recently, I became the mom of a college graduate. As I said recently, I have mixed feelings on the subject. But rather than wallow in the fact that my baby is now an adult, I’m focusing my efforts on preparing him to start his post-collegiate life.

As a graduation gift to our son, I put together a book I called a "Life Instruction Manual." The idea came from my last-minute panic to impart wisdom upon him before he walks out the door. (We moms just can’t leave well enough alone.) But I knew that my advice about laundry and personal hygiene wouldn’t be enough.

The other night, having once again found myself at the end of the day without dinner on the stove, my husband, daughter and I went to Balistreri’s on 68th Street. Being Thursday night, it was fairly busy.

At one point during dinner, my daughter looked around the restaurant and said: “They should really expand, at least so there’s more room for chairs.”
