Be there: Breaking ground at Hoyt Park

Be there.   You might remember it forever.

This Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m., we will be breaking ground for a new pool at Hoyt Park.  The celebration will top off four years of hard work by your friends and neighbors in the Friends of Hoyt Park & Pool, Inc. (FOHPP).

The new pool will feature heated water -- a big improvement from the old and very cold 1939-era pool that closed in 1999.  It will also have competitive lap lanes, water slides, zero-depth entry, and a sand play area.  The old bathhouse will become a coffeehouse or casual restaurant.  The pool will open during Memorial Day weekend in 2011.  (For more information, visit http://www.friendsofhoytpark.org.)

At the ceremony, local officials will make a "few well chosen remarks," but only a few.  The high point will be a "groundbreaking" by local children.  FOHPP will provide small shovels for the kids.  Adults can dig in, too, but please bring your own shovel.

After the groundbreaking, FOHPP will hold a "Diggin' to Dive In" event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Hoyt Park Picnic Areas 3 and 4 on Menomonee River Parkway.  There will be games, food, and refreshments, and music will be played by The Chickadees and The Garlic Mustard Pickers.

Be there.  You'll have fun, and you and your kids just might remember this event for a lifetime.  It's the way summer -- and Wauwatosa -- should be.
