The Frugal Gardener

I'm a Tosa resident and gardener for 40 years who loves to save money. I'm the daughter of Maryalice Koehne, an award- winning garden writer. Gardening is holistic and can be inexpensive, let me tell you the deals I've found.

Deals, Deals and more Deals!

Through the years, I've found some excellent resources for plant, tree and shrub materials and I'm pleased to share some with you! For years I've been sending these tips out on a Karaoke/Ladies email list and it's nice to have a wider audience.

Keep in mind, frugal does not simply mean cheap. I prefer the broader meaning as defined here: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/frugal,

fru·gal  (frgl)

adj.

1. Practicing or marked by economy, as in the expenditure of money or the use of material resources. See Synonyms at sparing.

2. Costing little; inexpensive: a frugal lunch.

FG Note:  Pretty much done for this year but they also have pre-planted hanging baskets and containers that are awesome.  This year they added some unique beehive and geometric basket for $15.00 a pop.  I found them elsewhere for over $30.00 each!  They will be selling produce later in the season.

Sendik's Food Market

FG note:  They do a really nice job with the garden center.  Be sure to check out the clearance plants- I've found some gems at way reduced prices.

FG Note: I need to make a special note of Wisconsin Garden and Pet. This local business has helped many homeowners and gardeners over the years. Kudos to the Gerlach family for their commitment to our community. When my husband and I purchased our first home, we rented lawn care spreaders and bought supplies from WI Garden and Pet as well as plants and produce.

In part it is due to Dan Gerlach that my husband can now claim to have one of the nicest lawns in Tosa. Well I have to give credit to the underground sprinkler system too! Thanks WI Garden & Pet!
