Gas Pains

Tom grew up in Milwaukee, bartended in Wauwatosa in the '70s and moved here in 1984.

Commentary, observations and musings about the outdoors, life in general and maybe Tosa politics and personalities will be the order of the day. He savors a lively debate as much as terrific cooking.

Hunt Fish Vote

Critters, Fish'n, Hunt'n, Outdoors, Politics-Other

That headline is from a bumper sticker I have.

Politics has once again won-out over science-based wildlife resource management.

The State Assembly failed in an attempt to override Governor Doyle's veto of a measure to restore the power of appointment of DNR Secretary to Wisconsin's Natural Resources Board.

This has put me in a foul mood.

The vast majority of Wisconsin's hunting and angling organizations along with thousands of hunters, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts have been pushing for years to take-back the appointment power from the Governor.

Sure - I'm conflicted about this from time-to-time.  There are some compelling arguments to be made on both sides of the issue.

My bottom line is this.

I spend countless days in the course of a year tromping afield, sitting in a deer stand, turkey blind or casting a bait.  The critters don't have a voice.

All of the moneyed interests have a voice already.  A well-financed voice.

And I and my brethren that so value the resources that feed ourselves and our souls have just about had it with dithering elected officials and lawyers making wildlife resource decisions.

I need to go now and take my mind off of this nonsense.

  1. TT and Old Tosan nailed it right. Having an unelected board, with the power the DNR employs, name their own Boss is ridiculous at best.

A department head, DNR Secretary, absolutely needs to be accountable to the electorate if even by means of the elected Governor. To remove that accountability entirely would lead to.....well...like TT said about the MATC board, no accountability. And that is a disaster waiting to happen, again.

We can all agree that the DNR is already a mess, but a mess that we can't afford to make even worse.

Oh my God, I'm supporting a decision made by Gov. Doyle...head spinning....body twitching....eyes glazing over....
  2. TT, this might be a first. You're absolutely correct.

If this is such a good idea (and it isn't), we should allow the bankers to name the head of the Department of Financial Institutions, WMC to name the Sec of Commerce, WEAC the Superintendent of DPI (um, well..), the AFLCIO the Secretary of Workforce Development, and the public employees union the Sec of Admin. Ridiculous.
  3. Better to hold the Gov accountable for this DNR mess than have it like the MATC board which has no accountablility.

    Simmer down gas.
