Gas Pains

Tom grew up in Milwaukee, bartended in Wauwatosa in the '70s and moved here in 1984.

Commentary, observations and musings about the outdoors, life in general and maybe Tosa politics and personalities will be the order of the day. He savors a lively debate as much as terrific cooking.

A Bircher, Truther, Birther and an Oath Keeper Walk Into a Bar

Scary People, Strange But True, Politics-Other

Sounds like the opening line to a funny joke, eh?

Hardly.

The Tea Party movement seems to have attracted more than its share of round the bend extremists lately.  And it is not so funny anymore.  Makes you sort of long for the days of Joe the Plumber.

The New York Times published an interesting piece today. Lengthy – but worthy of reading.  All that stuff that’s been bandied-about on the internet over the past year has finally grabbed the attention of the main stream media.

The John Birch Society has risen from the undead.  The “birthers” who doubt the legitimacy of the President’s citizenship.  The 911 “truthers” who are convinced the government brought down the twin towers.  And the Oath Keepers with their rag tag militia following.  They have all found a home in the Tea Party movement. Along with an assortment of racists, anti-immigrant groups, survivalists, secessionists, anti-government conspiracy aficionados, born-again constitutional scholars and your garden variety angry people.

I'm sure most Tea Partiers aren't misguided.  But why does this movement attract such a disproportionate share of society's fanatics?

Do you think someone has put something in the water?

There you go, Tom, you are making trouble.  Someone is gonna think that the New World Order really did put something into the water supply and is going to take over our brains.

Just like these Tea Party people I have legitimate concerns about issues like health care and health care reforms.  I also harbor doubts about government interference with health care.

I just so happen to believe that the Obama Administration has wasted a perfectly good year chasing health care reform while the economy continued to stagnate.  One word Mr. President - jobs.

But I digress.

I also have concerns about the administration’s budget.

To illustrate my concern allow me to make it simple for you to understand.

Let’s pretend that I require $149,000 per year to live the lifestyle I have grown accustomed-to.  This would be my annual budget.

Dude – you have a comfortable lifestyle.

Seriously.  Just pretend that is the number.

Furthermore – my take-home pay (after taxes) amounts to only $100,000.  So to make ends meet I borrow the difference of $49,000.  That is how I make ends meet for the next year.

How many years do you think I can keep that up?  Especially if I had grown accustomed to doing that for many years already?

I think it’s a fair question to ask because that, in a nutshell, is the Obama Administration's budget.

I think the Tea Party people have a legitimate gripe about this level of deficit spending.

So maybe we share some common gripes.  We have something in common.

Alas - unlike them I prefer to associate with rational individuals.

But don't take my word for it.

All you have to do is a simple Google search.  Starting with Tea Party followed by select key words such as:  Armageddon, Oath Keepers, Martial Law, Birther, Sarah Palin, Despot, 911, Federal Reserve, Obama Internment Camps, or Patriot.  Use your imagination.  Try Glen Beck and indulge your creative side.

You'll find all sorts of stuff like-

This kook  who was clearly planning for the apocalypse

A birther raises the roof at the first National Tea Party Convention

Or this Oath Keeper and featured Tea Party speaker

If you want to be taken seriously you really shouldn't hang around with people that think there are Bolsheviks hiding in their woodshed.

Edit-

The Tea Party movement is dominated by conspiracist kooks

Conservative Andrew Breitbart raises an eyebrow or two with a Birther getting top billing at Tea Party convention

  1. A couple of additional thoughts panzer.

You made a huge error in with your assumption that anything I have said/published stems from Oath Keepers connection to the US military. You – sir - are out of line. Do your research.

I have never, ever, disparaged the organizations or individuals that constitute the US military.

Here’s your chance to educate us.

According to Oath Keepers I am apparently at imminent peril of the one or all following:

    Confinement to a concentration/detention camp

    Subjugation by a dictator

Detainment as an unlawful enemy combatant and subject to military tribunal

Wisconsin will be thwarted if it wishes to assert it’s sovereignty (whatever that means)

    Invasion by foreign troops

My food and personal stuff will be confiscated

Please share your supporting evidence for this.

My 56 readers await the courtesy of your reply.
  2. Hey panzer...

Where were the Oath Keepers when warrant-less wiretapping of US citizens came into vogue?

Capt. McTyeire is the master of the understatement.

    Dyer ‘over did it’

I'm comforted knowing that Dyer's alleged forcible rape and sodomy of a 7 year-old and possession of a stolen grenade launcher is simply a matter of having 'over did it'.

Looks like Charles Dyer was certainly of use to the Tea Party movement and the Oath Keepers right up until the time of his arrest.

If you want to be taken seriously you shouldn't associate with kooks.

    Drain your swamp.
  3. Incredible. People look at the Oath Keepers, read the first line that states former military and scream "Right Wing Lunatics!!!! Right Wing Lunatics!!!!!" it's a shame that a little bit of research was not done to find out EXACTLEY what this organization believes in. I'll give you a hint: Protecting the constitutional rights of ALL American citizens ( heck, that must apply to democrats/liberals too!!!) Yet another bloggers pathetic laziness exposed. Sad but true
  4. Tosa Townie,
If you call beckkl's complaints about the Patriot Act a "straw man argument," what do you have to say about the endless laundry list of issues on the Oath Keeper's site?
  5. Ditto rugbymom
  6. The trail of posts in this topic deserves one response: Hurray for our freedom to express our opinions - kooks, birthers, whoever. Good topic, Gas Pains.
  7. Townie, once again, I must reply . . . huh? I have no idea how you can claim that the Patriot Act does not affect citizens of the U.S. Did you know:

    - With no warrant, the FBI demands financial, internet and/or library usage information on 50,000-plus American citizens per year, the vast majority of whom have committed no crime and are not being charged with a crime. It is only the Patriot Act that allows them to do this.

    - the government can collect phone and email records without a warrant and without demonstrating any reasonable reason for suspicion.

Do you know that your anti-government writings on these blogs means that the FBI may have a file on you right now? You don't think, now that it's legal (supposedly), that the government isn't sweeping through emails and websites to flag anti-goverment sentiment?
  8. Beckkl get your head out of your rather sizeable rear end. The Patriot Act did not affect you nor other citizens of the US, you and your kind continue to throw up that straw man argument and it is as empty as most of your collective heads.
  9. I'd also like to know where the "Oath Keepers" were during the creation of the Patriot Act, and countless other infringements on to our constitutional rights during the past decade.
  10. I too looked at the Oath Keeper website. Looks like the main goal is to "vastly increase their numbers". That and to NOT do a bunch of stuff they feel is in contradiction with with the constitution.

My brother in law would make an awesome Oath Keeper. He doesn't do sh#t.
