A Week Away
Summer is here and the temperatures have finally joined in with the season. Is it me or did it seem like I went from turning on my heat to the air-conditioning in a matter of a week? What happened to those nights that you could leave your windows open and feel the cool breeze?
Anyway, tomorrow we are heading up north for our first week-long vacation of the summer. We are spending the week at our cabin near the Dells. It will be the first time since we bought the place 3 years ago that we will be spending more than just a long weekend there and I couldn’t be more excited! There is lots to do from now until we leave, but the anticipation is killing me. As a single mom, it is really hard for me to relax at home. There is always something that needs to be done around the house. Seems like I am always running downstairs to move the clothes from the washer to the dryer or hauling up a laundry basket upstairs to fold and put away. I have had moping the kitchen floor on my list for almost 2 weeks now and it doesn’t even look like I am going to get it done before we leave.
I plan on forgetting everything that will be waiting for me when we get home and enjoying smores by the campfire, evenings without the TV or internet and afternoons at the pool or riding bikes.
I want my child to have memorable summer vacations just like I did as a kid. With 4 kids, money was tight for my parents, but we always spent 2 weeks every summer at my grandparent’s house in Illinois. Since we were my grandmother’s only grandkids, she spoiled us for those 2 weeks and we loved every minute of it. We didn’t mind being my grandfather’s golf caddy because we knew he would pay us a ridiculous amount of money that we could use for new school clothes and supplies. We would even go with my grandmother when she got her hair done at the beauty shop. She would show us off to her lady friends and let us eat candy until she was done then take us out to lunch. Even church was fun because we knew everyone was going out to Lums for breakfast afterwards.
Unfortunately we will be back into our routine right after vacation and as the days go by, it will seem like our week up at the cabin was months ago. The good news is that we have another vacation planned in August. We will be spending a week in Toronto with one of my sisters and her family. I have been to Toronto a few times for work at my previous job, but I never got a chance to enjoy the city. As a bonus we will be heading to Niagara Falls, which I am super excited about. I have wanted to see it for years. This will be a huge surprise for my daughter since we decided to keep it a secret from the kids.
If the week at the cabin isn’t memorable, the week in Toronto will be. I think I will have the memories taken care of for this year. Wonder what next summer has in store?
Have a great summer everyone!
