Write of Passage

Maureen Connors Badding arrived in Wauwatosa 22 years ago via Buffalo and Phoenix. She's a freelance writer and habitual volunteer who enjoys book clubs, travel, entertaining and cheering for her daughter's swim team.

Hey, Mo, a Half-pint is Enough!

Mo's

It could be a consequence of being Irish, but I love Guinness. I actually enjoy the taste, but it doesn't hurt that Guinness is packed with antioxidants, which help maintain a healthy heart and lower cholesterol. Guinness also contains fewer calories than an equal amount of skim milk or orange juice. (End of commercial!)

I also love Mo's Irish Pub here in Tosa. Unfortunately, the handful of times that I've been there, I've been faced with a Guinness dilemma. Mo's only serves Guinness by the pint (or so their servers say).

A pint of Guinness is too much of a good thing. If I expect to function throughout the rest of the evening, I only want a half-pint. It's really not an unusual request. I've gotten a half-pint any time I've asked for it in restaurants in Ireland or elsewhere in the Milwaukee area.

I've called and talked to Mo's bartender and a manager, and both assure me that they would be happy to serve a half-pint. But anytime I've ordered it from a server, they tell me they don't have half-pint glasses. Usually I coerce them into bringing me a pint glass of Guinness that's half full. Sometimes they charge me for the whole glass, sometimes not.

Certainly there are more important issues facing us today, but I can't help but think this is representative of so much excess in our society. From the obscene portions served in restaurants to McMansions that exceed the buyers' budgets, we're taught to think that bigger is better.

Sometimes bigger is bad -- especially when it comes to alcohol. I hate to think that a restaurant that applied for a permit to open at 6 a.m. last St. Patrick's Day would encourage excessive drinking.

So do me a favor. Next time you're at Mo's, please ask for a half-pint of Guinness. Maybe if they hear it from enough people, they'll buy a few half-pint glasses.
