Write of Passage

Maureen Connors Badding arrived in Wauwatosa 22 years ago via Buffalo and Phoenix. She's a freelance writer and habitual volunteer who enjoys book clubs, travel, entertaining and cheering for her daughter's swim team.

From Tosa to Broadway

Theater, Tosa East

What's in the Wauwatosa water supply that creates such theatrically talented kids? For at least 10 years, our family has been attending plays and musicals at Tosa East (and, more recently, at Tosa West) and we've yet to see a bad performance. The acting, singing, dancing, sets and costumes are among the best you'd expect to find in local community theater. And that's exactly how we've come to view Tosa East productions — as community theater, not just high school theater — because year after year, these kids produce a quality show that the whole town can enjoy.

It should come as no surprise that the Tosa schools produce great actors, musicians and crew members. We have an outstanding music program at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. Our Recreation Department offers acting instruction and opportunities from K4 on. And we have a long tradition of launching quality theatrical programs. It's no wonder that dozens of Tosa East graduates make living in theater and television in New York, L.A. and Chicago. (In fact, Spencer Tracy attended Tosa East for a few semesters!)

If you don't believe me, this is the weekend to see for yourself. The Tosa East Players will be performing "The Nerd" this Friday and Saturday nights (November 2 & 3) at 7:30 and Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. (Repeat performances will be next Friday and Saturday, November 9 & 10.) I've heard from more than one source that it's hilarious. To reserve tickets, call 773-2004. And if you're in the mood for a musical, Tosa West is performing "Bye Bye Birdie" this Thursday, Friday and Saturday (November 1-3) at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Call the ticket line at 773-3219 to reserve seats.

And, no, I'm not related to anyone in either play.
