Please Drive Carefully

Both my children attended McKinley school when they were in grade school, so the following story is of a concern to me.

North Ave is very busy and many school children cross North Ave at 88th street as well as 90th street - both crossings have crossing guards, yet as you will read in the following story - drivers are not careful while driving on North Ave.  Also remember that North Ave is a 2 lane road  between 92nd and 60th street.  Drive carefully.

I was discussing the following situation with a friend of mine (her son attends McKinley) and it prompted me to write this and convey what could have been a tragedy.

Here is the story:

"At about 3:40 my Mom called me from home and told me that my son had to tell me something.  Once the phone was passed to him, he cried 'We were almost killed!"  After trying to explain the situation to me I had him put my mom back on the phone.  Here is what happened.

He goes to McKinley elementary school and on Wednesday through Friday's when he is picked up by myself or my mom we have to cross North Avenue on 90th Street.  Yesterday when Mom, my son, and my infant daughter were crossing 90th, the Guard walked out into the street to stop traffic.  Westbound traffic stopped and Eastbound traffic stopped.  However, right before my family's crossing was complete, my mom heard tires squealing.  She look up to see a car heading for them at full speed in the far right "lane" (which we know is not a lane) zooming right pass the car which was already stopped for the crossing guard. Paralyzed by the thought of imminent death, my mom couldn't do much.  Thank God the car  swerved and came to a stop mere feet from my family.  The car had to swerve so hard that it was actually perpendicular to North Avenue.

I prayed very hard last night thanking God that he protected my family, but I can't help but think how quick my life would have been changed because of the stupidity of one driver.  I know that driver was very shaken too and I can't imagine how he feels knowing that he could have taken out an entire family.  There would have been NO REASON for that type of accident.  I guess, I want people to know to BE CAREFUL out there.  These are our children and we love them so very much.  North Avenue and 76th street are so crowded with school children during the beginning and end of the school day please, please look out for our children."

So please be careful while driving on North Ave - we do not need a tragedy!!

That is just "MY TWO CENTS"
