Shooting our President
"Oh God, please don't let it happen again!"
That was my first thought on March 30, 1981 -- 30 years ago today -- when I heard the horrible news that President Ronald Reagan, his press secretary, and a Secret Service agent had been shot in Washington, D.C. Like most Americans, my mind raced back to the days in 1963 and 1968 when assassins took the lives of President John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and President Kennedy's brother, Senator Robert Kennedy. In 1981, I hadn't recovered from the shock of those killings, and I couldn't bear to think that another President might be killed. My first thought was a hasty prayer for President Reagan, for myself, and for the country that had been turned upside down by the previous killings.
