Gas Pains

Tom grew up in Milwaukee, bartended in Wauwatosa in the '70s and moved here in 1984.

Commentary, observations and musings about the outdoors, life in general and maybe Tosa politics and personalities will be the order of the day. He savors a lively debate as much as terrific cooking.

Closing the Old Year with a Bunch of Firsts

It was back to the world of reality today.  The routine of the day job and the back-log from being away from the day job.  Changing my eating habits and no more sleeping-in.  It wasn’t a slap in the face – but it was close.  Let's call it a rude awakening.

It has been terrific to have gone away for a spell - having taken the opportunity to use some sorely-needed vacation time.  Quirky technology issues that messed with my connectivity might possibly have been divinely inspired - a means of forcing a disconnection from matters of minimal importance.

Gas Pains Drops Out of the Top Ten

Gas Pains

Did you hear cheering coming from the Palace or was that just my imagination?

Over the holiday break it occurred to me to inquire of The Wizard who resides over at The Mother Ship about the vital statistics concerning this ridiculous soapbox known as a blog.

Girlfriend

Girlfriend, Hunt'n

The other day I was de-boning a thawed pheasant when the dog tiptoed into the kitchen - nose twitching.  Ordinarily she does this when the chopping of raw vegetables occurs as an errant hunk of carrot might miraculously find its way to the floor.

Pheasants cast a similar spell over her.  Even skinned and frozen birds.  She can sniff them out from the other side of the house while snoozing and will come schmoozing around to see what's-up.

Last Friday I was leaving the assisted living center for the first time through the front door.

I had entered through the front door not but thirty minutes earlier.  Preparing to exit I was certain I had returned to the same place.  There was the same gas fireplace, the same television and the same bookcases.  There were mostly the same residents sitting there too.

Observations from the Big Fat Middle

Politics-Other, Politics-Tosa, Public Policy, Random Musings and Idle Chit Chat, The Big Fat Middle

How about that Massachusetts election, eh?

Now before you Tea Party people get too full of yourselves it is instructive to note that in the past twenty years or so Democratic recruitment has shrunk from 48 percent of the Massachusetts electorate to 37 percent.  Even though Republican representation is smaller it was only until recently that Massachusetts had elected Republican Governors for sixteen years in a row.   So it was pretty hard not to see this upset coming.

The Garden Chronicles

Gardening

It is almost February and I am down to my last garden cabbage.  A nice firm one.  What can you do with one red cabbage?

The winter squash supply has dwindled but my vast store of potatoes and onions should hold-up until planting time.  Everything else has been canned, frozen or already consumed.  My thoughts are now turning to spring planting.

Keeping Up With the Joneses

Public Policy, Politics-Tosa, Gas Pains

Not my words - but those of Alderman Meaux.  Why keep up with the Joneses?   This, a rather succinct summation from the Second District Alderman who was speaking from the audience in attendance at last night's meeting of the Committee on Employee Relations.  He also reiterated the notion that  - More money doesn't guarantee a quality mayoral candidate.

Committee Chair Peter Donegan was conducting the third meeting on the matter of mayoral compensation.
